Finishing Techniques

Borders, Bindings and Mitered Corners

Teacher: Julia Podany Samolyk, Digital Art Quilts

Friday October 1, 10-12

Julia demonstrates proper borders and sizes, applying borders to competition standards with perfect mitered corners, along with scalloped (curved) binding using Bias tape.  This is a 2 hour class with a CD of techniques used.  Nothing finishes a quilt like perfect binding and finishing!

Curved Piecing, Paper Piecing Simplified

Double Wedding Ring techniques, Half Square Triangles, Slash and Spread techniques, Pattern Drafting

Julia demonstrates paper piecing to make curved piecing simple along with pinning and stitching techniques that give a quilt perfection.  This is a 2 hour class with a CD of techniques and patterns.

Square in a Square Technique

Saturday October 2, 11:30-2:30

 

Make a wonderful Wallhanging using the Square in a Square technique ruler.  You will learn the flying geese and square in a square blocks and how to adapt this technique to all of your triangles.  Perfect points and easy triangles.

Technique Tune Up

Refresh proper cutting tehcniques, pressing, seaming and layout and assembly.  Proper use of tools.

Julia demonstrates proper cutting techniques usin gscissors as well as rotary cutting precision.  Using the correct rule and pressing for construction.  Good Beginners Class or as a refresher for those who feel a little rusty.  Squaring up fabric, Cutting Strips, Strip Piecing.  Reading a Pattern.

Unlocking Your Creativity - The Key Is Templates

Have you ever wished a quilting pattern reflected your personality? Would you like to create a design that is Unique to YOU? Need help getting a design from concept to quilt? Join Patricia as she shows you how to move templates to create stunning designs that look complicated but are in reality the simplest of shapes. She will teach you four techniques for moving templates. These techniques can be used by all, regardless of your method of quilting (hand, domestic machine, long-, mid-, or short-arm machine). How to transfer the design to quilt using a variety of methods will be discussed. Join me in learning how to release the creativity inside you.

Taking the Headache out of Machine Tension

Teacher: Mike Gilomen

Friday 11-12

An overview of adjusting tension and understanding why balanced tension in the fabric when sewing does not mean the tension on the top and bobbin threads are the same.  In fact you will learn the top thread is actually 10 times that of the bobbin tension when the sewn results are balanced. A complete demonstration of using the TOWA bobbin case gauge and a Top Tension Gauge will be used, although I will be showing how to do without such tools as well. I will cover thread control as well as different ways to tension thread.  If you want to be a thread artist this is especially a class not to miss.

So You Think Your Machine is Out of Time

Teacher: Mike Gilomen

Saturday 12-1 

A class on the mechanics of a Quilting Machine and just what is “Timing”.  The fact your machine is breaking thread or Skipping stitches may not always mean it is “Out of Time”.   Learn to look at the timing to verify the need and just how to remedy and correct timing issues.  This class will help anyone machine quilting regardless of the brand you use.

Beginning Hand Quilting

Learn the Rocking Stitch in this class.  We explore different techniques and materials including batting, needles, threads, and hoops.  Understand how to start and stop your stitching, basting and marking your quilts.

Introduction to Longarm Quilting

Have you been waiting for a chance to try Longarm Quilting?  Did you recently purchase your longarm quilting machine and could use a few tips?  This is the class for you!  We will cover several basic techniques such as starting and stopping, adjusting tension, avoiding thread breakage, basic stitching, loading your quilt, stabilizing your quilt, turning your quilt (for large borders), marking as you go, and using pantographs from the rear of the machine.

T-Shirt/Memory Quilt

Do you think all T-shirt quilts look the same-squares with logos and sashing?  Have you been asked to make a quilt from "memory items" but don't know where to start?  Do you hate the thought of spending a lot of time and effort on a T-shirt quilt?  Have you been avoiding that box of "old stuff" that you are supposed to turn into a quilt?  This lecture style class will introduce you to the "no piecing" fusible method to create your own memory quilt.

Quick and Easy Reversible Jacket

This lecture class will cover tips, tricks and really easy methods for making jackets.  It is much easier than it was in "Home Ec" class!  Learn a fast way to make a jacket reversible, so you can skip the facings!  See ideas to easily "customize" patterns to create unique jackets.  We will also discuss quilting ideas and batting choices.
